The International Chocolate Awards announced the winners of the 2do. Concurso Nacional de Chocolate Colombiano. This prestigious competition took place during the 2023 edition of the Salón del Cacao y Chocolate Colombiano in Arauquita, a region known for its high-quality cacao production in the state of Arauca.

What is the significance of this competition?

With the collaboration of the International Chocolate Awards, the contest was organized in partnership with the directors of the Salón del Cacao y Chocolate Colombiano and the National Federation of Cacao Growers (FEDECACAO). This competition aims to recognize and celebrate the exceptional quality of Colombian chocolate and promote the country's rich cacao heritage.

How was the competition organized?

The 2do. Concurso Nacional de Chocolate Colombiano is part of the Cacao Country Support Program initiated by the International Chocolate Awards in 2015. This program includes a series of competitions and educational initiatives to support and elevate the cacao industry in Colombia.
During the competition, expert judges evaluated a wide range of chocolate products from different regions of Colombia. The entries were judged based on criteria such as flavor, texture, aroma, and overall quality. The winners were selected based on the highest standards of excellence in the chocolate industry.

Who were the winners?

After careful deliberation, the judges have selected the top chocolate producers in Colombia. Among the winners with high scores is one of our favorite chocolate makers - Sierra Sagrada Chocolate. It's a small family business from Sierra Nevada which works with indigenous cacao from Arhuaco tribe and produces one of the world's best single-origin dark chocolate bars.

Functional chocolate is a terrible name for a very good idea

Despite being the newest trend in chocolate, I find the name functional chocolate absolutely horrible. It suggests you can do something with it besides eat it — hammer a nail into the wall, say, or feed the fish in your aquarium. (Don't. It's a terrible idea, and the fish will not thank you.) But it is what it is, the name is already established on the market, and so, as the song says — let it be.

If you know, you know. And if you don't, this is a good place to begin — because the bar in question is made from one of the oldest and rarest cacaos on Earth, grown in a valley most people will never reach, by a maker who sold her home to get to it.

Let me get the awkward part out of the way. The single highest-scoring bar of the 2026 European Bean-to-Bar competition — higher than every dark bar, every heroic 100% slab, every serious-faced single origin in the room — is a white chocolate with flowers in it.

Sometimes you unwrap a bar and it's wrong. A pale, dusty, greyish film has crept across the surface, the gloss is gone, and it looks faintly stale. It's called bloom — a lovely word for something so disappointing — and it's one of the most common questions we're asked.
